چکیده

in 2010, more than 85% of the corn acre age and more than 90% of the soybean acreage in the uSa was planted with genetically modified (gM) crops (uSDa, 2010). Most of those crops contained trans genes from other species, such as bacteria, that confer resistance to herbicides or tol erance to insect pests, and that were intro duced into plant cells using Agrobacterium or other delivery methods. the resulting ‘transformed’ cells were re generated into gM plants that were tested for the appropri ate expression of the transgenes, as well as for whether the crop posed an un acceptable environmental or health risk, before being approved for commercial use. the scien tific advances that enabled the genera tion of these gM plants took place in the early 1980s and have changed agri culture ir revocably, as evidenced by the widespread adoption of gM technology. they have also triggered intense debates about the potential risks of gM crops for human health and the environment and new forms of regulation that are needed to mitigate this. there is also continued public resistance to gM crops, particularly in Europe.

The state of genetically modified crop regulation in Canada

Genetically modified (GM) crops were first commercialized in Canada in 1995 and the 2014 crop represents the 20th year of successful production. Prior to the first commercialization of GM crops, Canada reviewed its existing science-based regulatory framework and adapted the existing framework to allow for risk assessments on the new technology to be undertaken in a timely and efficient manner. ...

Regional focus on GM crop regulation.

THE RECENT MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE DEVELopments in Brazil, China, and Mexico (1–3) demonstrates their emergence as the future developing country forerunners for commercial genetically modified (GM) crops in both the scientific and regulatory arena. The release of GM crops in these countries might result in the unintentional entry of GM seeds into neighboring countries that have not yet harnessed ...

Genetically modified crops: methodology, benefits, regulation and public concerns.

The genetic modification of crop plants from the methodology involved in their production through to the current debate on their use in agriculture are reviewed. Techniques for plant transformation by Agrobacterium tumefaciens and particle bombardment, and for the selection of transgenic plants using marker genes are described. The benefits of currently available genetically modified (GM) crops...

Canadian regulatory perspectives on genome engineered crops

New breeding techniques in plant agriculture exploded upon the scene about two years ago, in 2014. While these innovative plant breeding techniques, soon to be led by CRISPR/Cas9, initially appear to hold tremendous promise for plant breeding, if not a revolution for the industry, the question of how the products of these technologies will be regulated is rapidly becoming a key aspect of the te...

The release of genetically modified crops into the environment. Part I. Overview of current status and regulations.

In the past 6 years, the global area of commercially grown, genetically modified (GM) crops has increased more than 30-fold to over 52 million hectares. The number of countries involved has more than doubled. Especially in developing countries, the GM crop area is anticipated to increase rapidly in the coming years. Despite this high adoption rate and future promises, there is a multitude of co...
